Intel prepares 6 Core Desktop Processor

XeonAfter the last few years favoring dual core processors and four cores on the market for desktop and servers, Intel is currently preparing a six-core processors. In a statement on Wednesday (2/3/2010), Intel plans to release this year.

However, these processors will not be released for mainstream computers. For a while, the processor will be designed for desktop and server class. Chips that are used Westmere based architecture that provides better performance than previous generations and better power saving.

“The processor contains 1.17 billion transistors and has 12 MB cache,” said Intel spokesman as reported by PC World, Thursday (4/2/2010). The process of production using 32-nanometer technology as now used in Core processor I3, I5, and i7. Although essentially they have the same architecture, the six-core processor will not be equipped with integrated graphics chipset, so the user must still have a separate VGA card in the computer.

Intel six-core processor targeted for the desktop with Gulftown code name for the gamer market. This processor will be sold as one category with Core i7 and technically can be used with the same motherboard.

For servers, this processor will replace the six-core processors were released earlier in 2008 with the code name Dunnington. The name will be the same brand name, ie Xeon, although the performance is much better. Especially for the server, Westmere encryption technology is also equipped with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is a new, both to support data security and server virtualization.
